Bend Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Aug. 7.

Community Leadership

Charlie Anderson set up a trust and purchased a defunct Camp Tamarack in 2012 on a mission to bring Outdoor School and Summer Camp to all children in our community. In 2012 only 20% of our area 5th graders had access to outdoor school. Since then Charlie has made outdoor school possible for 100% of 5th graders from Gilchrist all the way to Warm Springs. To do this Charlie has had to set up a trust, purchase the camp, rehabilitate the facilities including several large capital improvements, create curriculum, build relationships with the schools to get them on board, build out a staff, and learn to schedule and coordinate outdoor school for 2500 kids per year! He did all this with no assurance of success and no prior experience in leading an organization. His background was in special education. Additionally he has created Summer Camps that strive to provide outdoor experiential learning opportunities to all kids that want to come, regardless of their ability to pay. If a kid wants to come to camp, Charlie and his team make sure they get to. Between outdoor school, summer camps, and high school student counselors, Camp Tamarack provides an outdoor learning opportunity to over 5000 area students each year.

Charlie saw a need in our community, took bold moves to fix the problem, and has succeeded beyond anyone’s expectations.
